Scenic flights by airplane, ultralight, glider, and hot air balloon in Illinois

Illinois offers a wide range of aerial activities that cover both the city of Chicago and the rural areas in the interior of the state. Airplane flight is one of the most accessible experiences: departing from small airports, it lets you observe the shores of Lake Michigan and the city’s silhouette, with its skyscrapers and network of bridges. Away from the metropolis, routes are organized in the Midwest countryside, where ultralight and glider flights give a direct glimpse of the vast agricultural plains.

Ultralights remain popular for short, easy-to-organize introductory flights, while gliders attract those who want to try silent, engine-free flight. Hot air ballooning is another very present option, especially around Champaign and Galena. It lets you gain altitude gently and traverse the region’s valleys or wooded areas.

Skydiving and helicopter flights around Chicago and across the state

Thrill-seekers turn to skydiving, very popular in the state. Several centers are located in the north and east of Illinois, some near Chicago, others set farther back in rural areas. The tandem skydive begins with a climb in the airplane, then the descent offers a clear view before the parachute opens and a slower canopy flight brings you to landing.

Helicopters round out the offering, especially around Chicago where it’s possible to fly over the city and its lakefront. This type of flight gives a close-up perspective on neighborhoods, Soldier Field, and the Willis Tower. These activities are aimed at both travelers passing through and residents who want to see their state from a new angle, whether it’s a family scenic flight or a more intense introductory experience.
